Roomba

Brand reputation

What Reddit says about Roomba

Redditors generally consider Roomba a capable vacuum brand, but not always the best value for money. Its strengths are carpet cleaning, pet-hair pickup, and a long-established reputation, while its weaknesses include navigation inconsistencies and competition from newer robot vacuum brands. Opinions vary by model, with some owners remaining very satisfied and others preferring alternatives.

“MOST DURABLE? Alright then, new robot vacuums wont really do that. I know i will get downvoted for this but if you dont need self emptying, mopping etc, just pick up a second hand Roomba 500 series, they are known for being extremely reliable. Some 600 series like 675 or 690 are 500 series with wifi and some minor improvements, they are pretty common, cheap and easy to repair. Want mapping? Roomba 980 or any 900 series roomba (do note that roomba 900 series doesnt have keep out zones). 900 series are known for being reliable and just good robots over all. Why did i recommend these? Because newer robor vacuums these days have too many moving parts, and they work best at homes. While the roombas i listed above were also made for homes, old irobot was different than current day irobot, more reliable and roombas are pretty modular, you can take then apart and drop in a replacement part easily. They can work decently in commercial environments, especially 500/600 series. This subreddit is mostly "against" irobot, so i'll say this, i am not paid by irobot, i am a 14 year old on the internet who is passionate about this stuff :)) Edit: Check out Makita's industrial robot vacuums as well. Way more suited to commercial use.”

“I have three robots (Ecovacs x1 omni, Roomba j5+, and a Roborock S6 Pure). When my Roborock had constant issues I looked into durability and longevity as the number 1 criteria and found that almost all comments from owners with high hours (maybe 800+) were either roborock S5s, old random pattern roombas, and i series roombas. I'd recommend an i7+ or j series Roomba (for obstacle avoidance and more reliable dock). They are well suited to hair and heavy use because of the dual rollers, bin design (reduces filter clogging/motor strain), bin sensor for auto empty and dirt detect, modular design (fast replacement parts), part availablity, and reports from owners. VacuumWars also found that cleaning performance of 2.5 inch pet sized hair on carpet was 100%, unlike many modern flagship models. My j5+ was been flawless for 270 hours so far. The only issues I have seen online relate to cleaning of bin sensors and charging contacts. Hopefully this helps”

“They *could* but I doubt very much that they do; it would cost a lot. The biggest privacy risk is revealing a map of the layout of your home if your online account is hacked. I have an iRobot Roomba that empties its own bag into a base. Love it. Love not having to vacuum under beds and sofas. It took some prep to make my home ready for it--furniture needs to be high enough (and legs wide enough apart) for it to run up under. Lamp cords need to be secured. Don't run it automatically or when you're not home. Do clean the hair out of it after it runs (takes only a couple minutes). I run it once a week. I spend 3-4 minutes putting things like litter baskets and chairs up off the floor so it has a better reach, then schedule it to run 3x. Then turn the schedule off again and return loose items to the floor. Spend about a minute getting hair out of its rollers. I've had several good looks inside my Roomba and didn't see anything like microphones or cameras. Its bump sensors are not cameras. It does have an internet connection and so can be voice-controlled if you connect to Alexa or Google Home. But that is optional. If you only operate it with the app or onboard buttons, it cannot be voice controlled.”

“I have a Roborock S6 Pure thats been going strong for 5 years. Its got mapping, invisible walls, no go areas, etc and a mop pad. Its an excellent budget option imo but the software is a little basic. Roombas have much more sophisticated software for avoiding doggy accidents and spot detection, some of them even do suction mopping.”

I have an irobot roomba j7+ I got refurbished off eBay direct from irobot and was as good as new (was a return or something) and was a decent chunk cheaper, so i highly recommend doing that. It has parts that need to be replaced pretty regularly, such as filters rollers and bags. Maintenance is easy, but relatively often.”

“I think Roombas have the best parts availability, but I'm not positive on that. If I was trying to optimize for BIFL I would go for a Roomba or something else with lots of parts available. Roombas also have the most cleaning power on carpets. Last I checked the random navigation robots get better coverage than the low-end "smart" navigating robots. That may have changed recently though. Vaccum Wars is the best source for how well each brand/model performs”

Previously, in our single-story, we used a Roomba 980. That became the upstairs robot until it died. I was so happy with the i7 plus that I didn't hesitate to replace it with another one. Now, I don't even think about the vacuums except when it's time to change the bag in the cleaning bases.”

There is way more upkeep on the robot with 2 Australian Shepherds and we still make a pass or two on our living room carpet to get the deep stuff. The self-empty feature is so nice. The mapping system is difficult at first. Make sure the space is VERY clear for the first few runs as it figured out the map of your floorplan but very happy with ours!”

“I wasn't going to comment but your question stuck in the back of my mind so I thought I might contribute. I have 7 robot vacuums in my busy household, of various brands, and another 7 Scooba floor-scrubbing robots that are a defunct iRobot product, and have no reason to contradict the advice here - Roborock and Eufy are both solid performers. I would only add two things. The first is that I haven't really touched iRobot except for the second-hand Scoobas but they do finally seem to be offering uniquely useful products atm. It's latest vacuum-only, for instance, compresses the waste in the dustbin to increase the time between empties. The second is that I've had good success splitting the money between a smart vacuum/mop that recognises cables, sets a rational course for cleaning etc, and an absolutely dumb AF one that hurtles around for hours until its battery runs out. The latter encourages the family not to leave crap all over the floor, vacuums for far longer than any cleaner would and thus picks up a lot more dust despite typically slightly weaker suction. These things have no map, no idea where it is and will either flee screaming from a pile of cables or try to hump it to death. You can set a schedule then delete the app. They're also good for quick cleanups. The smarter ones will go through a sort of Chinese tea ceremony of preparing their pads and achieving perfect positioning whereas the cheapo boys barrel into the room like a redneck riding a pig and just get the job done.”

“I have a dreame l20 ultra. It looks really well, but the vacuum gets clogged with dog fur immediately and then just rolls the rest around and forms clumps. It's still better than vacuuming manually because I can just pick up the clumps. I'm thinking about being in a second vacuum to help with the fur. I have one big dog. My old Roomba never had a problem with two big dogs (one was the same and the other shed waaay more). I'm interested in this thread to see which is best for fur.”

“I don’t think you can really go wrong as long as you stick to a main brand like Roborock or iRobot. Someone told me that the most important feature of a robo vacuum is a branded app that allows frequent software updates so that the model can improve over time. I didn’t realize that there are some brands out there that you basically just “get what you get” and it stays that way forever. I used this vacuum comparison spreadsheet created by another Redditor to narrow down the brands with the features I needed, and I ended up going with a Roomba.”

“We have 6 fur animals and 3 long-hair people here. My Narwal Z Ultra has been running daily for 11 days now. This morning it ran over some paper business cards and threw a "roller tangled error" because two cards got stuck in the roller. It managed to take itself to the base to dry and decontaminate the mop pads. Why am I recommending this unit? Because when I opened the roller to remove the business cards, it was completely devoid of any tangles. No fur, no hair, no cords. The roller was clean, and just the business cards were stuck in there. I have: Two Roomba i7+ units (also great with hair, but not as good as the Z, since long hair makes its way to the axel on the Roombas, where as the Z sucks it into the chamber) The OG Freo with anti-tangle roller (not as good as the Roombas at vacuuming or tangle-free operation) I also have a shark regular vacuum, and was considering their robovac before I got the Z but the Z is fantastic at both carpet and mopping. If you don't need a mop, the Roomba J7+ or S9 would be good. Not sure about newer ones. The roborocks are also very good. Check out the VacuumWars YouTube channel if you want to make comparisons”

We generally catch most of the big stuff but things like cherrios or stray pieces of cut up fruit may be on the floor. Again, it's much more frequently just crumbs. Toys: TOYS EVERYWHERE. Floor is always cluttered with play clothes, play necklaces, socks--you name it, it's on the floor. Our current robot vac is from like 2018 maybe? It's a roomba 600 series and it's frequently catching socks, necklaces, etc. Most of this, however, can be kept to a specific area, so if I could set specific clean times for specific spaces, I could do a quick pickup before it goes. So like clean the kitchen/dining during the day (no toys), clean the playroom and living room at night after we do a quick pick up.”

It is beyond superior in every way to my Roomba which was demoted to basement duty. A huge plus for me was the ease of integration into Home Assistant. It plays so much nicer than iRobot.”

“Only have had one, Roomba S9+, and after 3.5 years it has a wheel that is loose or something, and a scratched faceplate that prevents it from docking. I find it super frustrating that I can't see where it is until it ends a job, and that I can't get it to clean a specific area without creating a permanent new zone. I also have to be careful to pick everything up or it will get stuck after destroying my kids toys. I don't recommend it. I'm in the market for a new one and Roborock comes up a lot here. Dreame is supposed to be better for object avoiding but I also need good homeassistant integration and that seems to be lagging. So I'm at an impasse.”

“Some observations: A number of robots advertise a headlight of sorts for night cleaning. I would recommend one of these. Other models advertise that they don't need visible light, but I would be skeptical. Obstacle avoidance tends to be a feature where you get what you pay for. Dreame, Narwal, and Eufy seem to have better obstacle avoidance than other brands, though I would still check reviews to be sure. You're almost certainly going to do better with a newer model for longevity than your Roomba. Until last year, iRobot robots were known for poor navigation and poor efficency due to their lack of LIDAR. Any newer robot with some form of LIDAR will almost certainly do better. That said, 4000 square feet is huge. Look for the biggest battery you can find. Averages these days are around 5000 milli-amp-hours (mAh), which for you should be considered a lower bound. Also, you might look at Ecovacs models with their PowerBoost feature; it fast recharges the battery during routine stops for mop washing and the like, which both extends the cleaning time for the first cleaning and reduces the downtime for the inevitable recharge. Pretty much all robots these days have a quiet mode of some kind. Mops have come a long way since your Braava. Many have single flat pads on the rear half of the robot; these are not very good. An exception is Roborock's flat pads that vibrate. Generally, you'll want to stick with either two round-ish spinning pads on the back, or a roller-style mop. (I include robots like the Narwal Flow in this category, with more of a flat track than a round roller.) Each kind has advantages and disadvantages, so you'll want to look closely to see what you prefer. Nearly all self-empty stations will let you ignore the dustbin for at least a month at a time. I've replaced the bag in my Eufy S1 Pro three times since I bought it a year and three months ago. Cleaning the filter and dustbin on the robot is still important, though, so you'll want to check how often the vendor recommends doing that. Note that bagless vacuums are the norm today, but bagless self-empty stations for robots have drawbacks that you should be aware of; since the bag acts as a filter, bagless models need regular filter maintenance on the dock as well as the robot. You mention water hook-ups. A few models from Roborock, Dreame, Eufy, Narwal, and SwitchBot support direct water lines for both filling and emptying. In some cases, the vendor makes special models that support the lines; in others, the vendor sells a water hook-up kit. I would be skeptical of third-party kits, but kits designed by the vendor for the vendor's robots should be fine. Everyone seems to be recommending the robot they like/have. That's fine, but don't let it confuse or overwhelm you. In particular, I wouldn't buy a robot that hasn't been on the market for at least a few months, and that has few to no independent reviews. Most robots have problems when first released, which the influencers and paid reviews won't tell you about.”

“We had been using a cheapo Roomba for a few years, which stunk. I recently got the Roborock QX Revo Plus at Costco for $599. This thing is badass - there are tanks for clean and dirty water, it washes the mop pad after use, it's all self-contained. I am using it on a floor with hardwood and big area rugs, and I'm really happy with it so far. It maps out the floor, you can avoid pet food areas, etc. I may put one more in my upstairs level as soon as floors are done. I mostly use the app, but "Hey Siri clean the second floor" is the shortcut that does the routine, so it's fine.”

I just ordered the Qrevo S on refurb from Roborock, which does both vac and mop and can't wait to go back to Roborock. “The max is terrible and iRobot customer service is even worse. Sent 3 messages with no response over the last 3 months. I don’t even know where to begin at how terrible this technology is. But I will start with how it has ruined the floors in my house. It’s not just scratched them. It’s removed the top layer of floor from 10+ spots throughout the house. See photos. Otherwise, the mop bin on the back side doesn’t latch in anymore so anytime it bumps it’s rear, the mop bin comes out and falls on the floor. Aside from that, about every 3rd clean I have to clean the inside and mop dock thoroughly. It takes about 3-4 attempts of cleaning the exact same way for it to eventually agree to run. I have to take a straw and blow out the suction tube going from the robot to the dock. It’s a terrible terrible product and iRobot will not stand behind the product. DO NOT GET IROBOT. I’ve had every model of iRobot up to this one. Never again.”

“Yeah, we went from a top-of-the-line-4-years-ago Roomba S9+ to a just-under-top-of-the-line Roborock 10r this winter. It is amazing how much better the 10r is! The only places the S9 did better are related to overly-broad patents iRobot still holds (being able to detect when a dust bin is full so it goes and empties it, or detecting when the vacuum bag is full) mostly due to "first mover" advantages. But then they just sort of coasted and stopped innovating, and now are going bankrupt as a result.”

I'd also consider MOVA's V50 Ultra which is better suited for pet households since there's the ability for the robot to choose between regular cleaning solution and a pet-odor neutralization solution! I consider the V50 Ultra to be an upgrade over the X50 Ultra. I have more square feet than I care to share but what I found was, the lower end Roombas just weren’t worth their price; however, the higher-tier ones seem so do fairly well for “maintenance”. I say maintenance because it’s not used for deep cleaning, such as a handheld unit is. Also, have you ever driven a Rolls Royce? I suggest you don’t. They’re nice. I’ve had the S7 for 2 years, and the S4 I gave to my MIL after upgrading (hers still works perfectly). It’s a fantastic machine! “I have two Roomba s9s both with the emptying station. Been running them for about 6 years. Have had two XL size dogs with double coats. I found the machines frustrating in that the rollers would wear out quickly, they wouldn’t dock every time, filter problems etc. Then I stopped buying the very cheap AliExpress supplies for them and went back to iRobot branded ones - filters, bags, rollers- and most of the problems went away. Annoying.”

“I’ve got three Roombas, same process. The oldest (Original Eddie) one is 14 relegated to doing hard floors, mostly in the garage. He’s had two (non Roomba) battery replacements in that time. Completely random, no maps, crap with obstacles, cliff function too sensitive - until it’s not and he falls downstairs! Edgar 2 is upstairs and has become a bit hopeless, a new battery didn’t help. Obsesses over a particular spot, runs out of charge without finishing a room, fails to return to dock to recharge (wifi is good so not that). Edgar the third is downstairs, a combined vacuum and mop with self emptying. Stopped using the mop because a residue started building, but the vacuuming is good. My ideal would be two bases, one robot. Or one that can climb stairs It’s like supervising kindergarten if Edgar 2 and original Eddie are going.”
