Narwal

Brand reputation

What Reddit says about Narwal

Redditors tend to view Narwal as a strong option for mopping-focused households, but not necessarily the best all-around robot vacuum brand. Its main strengths are hard-floor mopping, quiet operation, and convenient self-cleaning docks. Its weaknesses include model-dependent navigation, carpet-cleaning limitations, and questions about long-term support. Buyers who primarily have hard floors may find Narwal appealing, while homes with lots of carpets or clutter may benefit from comparing it with Roborock and Dreame alternatives.

“The Roborock Curv, Dreame vacuums with the tri cut brush as the other person mentioned, and Narwarl Freo Z Ultra are probably the ones you want. Curv and Freo Z have brushes that are designed to pick up the hair and then the hair travels along the brush until it falls of the brush and is vacuumed up. The Dreame one cuts the brush, however the brush design results in weaker debris pick up.”

“Bought the Flow 2. Can’t comment on carpet vacuuming since we have tile floors, but its mopping performance is impressive. It has quirks, but as our first vacuum mop I’m really impressed. Our white tile shows the difference if we keep up with regular weekly passes. It struggles with tough stains tho and think disc mops might be better for that. But I honestly care more about overall true cleanliness, which roller mops are said to make the difference and you can def see it. I haven’t seen a setting that detects and clears stains before finishing, but reviewers show it does?? Can’t comment on longevity for now, but you probably can’t go wrong with some of the current flagships in recent years. Just try to purchase from places with good return policies and a discount if you can. It’s all evolving tech nonetheless.”

“Roller mop robots will generally offer much better mopping than spinning mop robots, but you'd need to take care of them more. The lowest-hassle roller mop robots I can think of are the Dreame Aqua 10 Pro Track, the MOVA Z50 Ultra, and the Narwal Flow. However, only the Dreame Aqua 10 Pro Track and the MOVA Z50 Ultra are in the international market. In the US, I'd look for the Eufy E25/E28, which has pretty good obstacle avoidance like the Eufy S1 Pro. For spinning mops, Dreame, Mova, and Narwal excel in obstacle avoidance. I think the newer models from these brands allow you to clean areas that the robot had to miss when it finishes the rest of the home before, because kids and toys were there earlier.”

“Narwal Freo Z Ultra has the best obstacle avoidance of any robot on the market. Self cleaning everything, and it will adjust the temperature of the water according to the dirt composition on the pads. My only complaint with it is that you have to change the water often if you do a lot of mopping. I assume their automatic water exchange system will eliminate that issue for me once it get it.”

“Our Narwal is fantastic in not getting any hairs stuck in its brush. But as a general point. Our experience is that the type of roller material is not as important regatding hair tangles. Silicon mihht be easier to get stuck hair off than one with bristles but what you really need are brushes that either have their own cutters fixed to the robot (Dreame seems to use such solutions) or bruahes that are only fixed on one side so that the robot can push the hair to the open side and suck it up from there”

“I second the Freo Z. The gals in my home shed 2' long hairs, that have brought every other vac to their knees. Haven't seen a single hair trapped on the roller of the Freo Z so far. And I did check the bin to make sure it was picking some up and it was full of hair. Very impressive. These single-ended roller designs seem to be more effective than cutting solutions from Dreame and others.”

“We have 6 fur animals and 3 long-hair people here. My Narwal Z Ultra has been running daily for 11 days now. This morning it ran over some paper business cards and threw a "roller tangled error" because two cards got stuck in the roller. It managed to take itself to the base to dry and decontaminate the mop pads. Why am I recommending this unit? Because when I opened the roller to remove the business cards, it was completely devoid of any tangles. No fur, no hair, no cords. The roller was clean, and just the business cards were stuck in there. I have: Two Roomba i7+ units (also great with hair, but not as good as the Z, since long hair makes its way to the axel on the Roombas, where as the Z sucks it into the chamber) The OG Freo with anti-tangle roller (not as good as the Roombas at vacuuming or tangle-free operation) I also have a shark regular vacuum, and was considering their robovac before I got the Z but the Z is fantastic at both carpet and mopping. If you don't need a mop, the Roomba J7+ or S9 would be good. Not sure about newer ones. The roborocks are also very good. Check out the VacuumWars YouTube channel if you want to make comparisons”

“Some observations: A number of robots advertise a headlight of sorts for night cleaning. I would recommend one of these. Other models advertise that they don't need visible light, but I would be skeptical. Obstacle avoidance tends to be a feature where you get what you pay for. Dreame, Narwal, and Eufy seem to have better obstacle avoidance than other brands, though I would still check reviews to be sure. You're almost certainly going to do better with a newer model for longevity than your Roomba. Until last year, iRobot robots were known for poor navigation and poor efficency due to their lack of LIDAR. Any newer robot with some form of LIDAR will almost certainly do better. That said, 4000 square feet is huge. Look for the biggest battery you can find. Averages these days are around 5000 milli-amp-hours (mAh), which for you should be considered a lower bound. Also, you might look at Ecovacs models with their PowerBoost feature; it fast recharges the battery during routine stops for mop washing and the like, which both extends the cleaning time for the first cleaning and reduces the downtime for the inevitable recharge. Pretty much all robots these days have a quiet mode of some kind. Mops have come a long way since your Braava. Many have single flat pads on the rear half of the robot; these are not very good. An exception is Roborock's flat pads that vibrate. Generally, you'll want to stick with either two round-ish spinning pads on the back, or a roller-style mop. (I include robots like the Narwal Flow in this category, with more of a flat track than a round roller.) Each kind has advantages and disadvantages, so you'll want to look closely to see what you prefer. Nearly all self-empty stations will let you ignore the dustbin for at least a month at a time. I've replaced the bag in my Eufy S1 Pro three times since I bought it a year and three months ago. Cleaning the filter and dustbin on the robot is still important, though, so you'll want to check how often the vendor recommends doing that. Note that bagless vacuums are the norm today, but bagless self-empty stations for robots have drawbacks that you should be aware of; since the bag acts as a filter, bagless models need regular filter maintenance on the dock as well as the robot. You mention water hook-ups. A few models from Roborock, Dreame, Eufy, Narwal, and SwitchBot support direct water lines for both filling and emptying. In some cases, the vendor makes special models that support the lines; in others, the vendor sells a water hook-up kit. I would be skeptical of third-party kits, but kits designed by the vendor for the vendor's robots should be fine. Everyone seems to be recommending the robot they like/have. That's fine, but don't let it confuse or overwhelm you. In particular, I wouldn't buy a robot that hasn't been on the market for at least a few months, and that has few to no independent reviews. Most robots have problems when first released, which the influencers and paid reviews won't tell you about.”

“We just got the Narwal Flow 2 four days ago and have been extremely impressed. It's not perfect, but compared to our outgoing Roborock S7 it is absolutely whisper quiet and we've been blown away (ie. disgusted) by how dirty the mop water has been and how much better our floors look. We have an open floor plan, but we still can't hear it from the next room over. The app isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, but I do admit it isn't as polished as Roborock's. Considering it was $600 less than the Saros 20 Flow, I think the value per dollar is hard to overlook.”

“Yep this is sadly true. Dreame, roborock, and Narwal don’t have good customer service compared to Eufy and Xiaomi (if this brand is available). It seems iRobot is also struggling with customer service so I’d recommend buying robots from an authorized retailer like Costco for easier customer service if you need to return it if it’s defective.”

“I am not sure your expectation of a lifespan of 8-10 years is realistic or necessarily desirable. I own an 8 year old robot vacuum. It is a beast, but it has been replaced twice and lives at my work now. I want the much better features and performance of a newer robot at home. My previous robot had the spinning pads, which were better than my previous stationary pad mops. It had a tragically short life (Narwal) and was replaced by a roller mop, which I like much better. If it was built to last 8-10 years, how long would I have been content with those spinning mops knowing a much better alternative was available? Definitely not 8-10 years. I think a lifespan of 4-5 years is optimistic if it is used gently and maintained well. A whole house vacuum twice per day and a daily mopping is heavy use and will likely impact the lifespan of the robot based on additional wear and tear. I would definitely look for a flagship machine if I wanted to maximize lifespan because you want to start out with up to date features if you are in this for the long haul. In 2018 when I bought it, my oldest robot was definitely a flagship model from a reputable company. Look for all of the bells and whistles that appeal to you, as these robots are improving quickly and you don't want to be stuck with something obsolete. Instead of Ecovacs X8, look at the X12S with the extending side brush, for example. That's going to become a standard feature you are going to wish you had. Get an extended warranty. When parts get harder to source, stock up.”

“Kocham mojego Mova z50 ultra. Mam 3 koty długowłose, żonę i córkę dlugowlose. Mova odkurza i mopuje codziennie, czyści idealnie do krawędzi, nawigacja super, nie zjada zabawek i drobiazgów, mop rolkowy to przełom, myje ciepła woda i podłoga jest błyszcząca bez smug. Zero awarii. Były dwa drobne problemy wynikające z wad konstrukcyjnych ale udało się je załatwić w 15 minut(wjazd do stacji załatwiony 5cm taśmy antyposlizgowej a docelowo wydrukiem z drukarki 3d, mop rolkowy piszczał ale wystarczyło papierem ściernym zmatowic rolki wewnatrz mopa)i już nic się nie dzieje. Jest super, uwielbiam go. Utrzymanie też dużo nie zabiera, dosłownie kilka minut na dolanie wody, wylanie brudnej, czasami oczyszczenie osi kółek z włosów( jak w każdym innym robocie).”

Neutral takes about Narwal (6)

“The Eufy s2 only scored a 2.80 in the mopping score. The Narwal flow 2 also scored pretty poorly at 2.66 (however. apparently there was a software update that was not installed prior to testing). I was in a very similar situation to you where I was looking for the absolute best mopping robot with no budget (check my prior posts). I have a mostly tile home with a kitchen that easily shows stains. I settled on the Mova z60 ultra. I believe it is third on vacuum wars (3.66) behind the T90 pro Omni (3.90). Since everyone is recommending the flow 2 I’ll just tell you why I picked this over the flow. Compared to the flow 2 The Z60 has a higher downward pressure (12N vs 17N I believe) and it rotates the mop 30rpm faster. The flow 2 mops with 60 degrees hot water but once the water actually reaches the floor I believe it would be cold anyway. Whilst specs are not everything my experience with the z60 has been very good. Compared to my old Z50 which has the same track mop as the flow 2 with higher pressure (18N) and 30 degree mopping the Z60 performs significantly better. Maybe the roller (instead of track) mop is just more effective at removing stains? Whilst I may be inherently biased towards the Z60, my decision was primarily based upon reviews and experiences with the Mova Z50. If I were you I would get either a z60 ultra (or the newer z70 ultra) or the T90 pro Omni. If you live in a country with good consumer protection laws I wouldn’t bother researching too much as it drove me absolutely crazy sorting through all of the paid reviews. Just try one of them out.”

“Remember roller mops require more maintenance and don't do as well to get under cabinets if they don't swing out and from what I'm understanding they don't get under as well because of the plastic casing.. did have e25 eufy but sent back (Amazon doesn't give you your money back right away) .. just FYI.. I've been chatting with somebody that works on these robots and says the pads are going to be the lower maintenance of the two.. and I am not unhappy with my current model freo z ultra.. not real thrilled with the vacuuming of it I preferred dreamies a little bit more and eufy e25 was better at vacuuming.. and if you have lvp which I do which is expensive you need it to have less water on the floor and it can't be real hot or you can ruin your floors and I paid a lot of money for my floors!”

“The narwal freo z ultra and freo x ultra both have anti tangle brushes. In my 1+ months of using both of them, no hairs has ever got stuck in the brush or the axle. My wife has super long hair which always annoys me - gets stuck on the regular vacuums brush and the roborock s7 (axles, not on the rollers). But with the narwal, I never had to clean them once. Narwal does a pretty good job of vacuuming and mopping but the app isn't mature and the same goes for the robots themselves. They have some quirks - the mapping/ map updating kinda sucks sometimes and both the robots I had to re-map the house at least 2-3 times. Also, splitting rooms or modifications to the map also has some quirks that annoy me so much. I also had some concerns on privacy so I returned the freo z, still have the freo x, will use it for a bit and decide. The only thing holding me from returning the narwals was/is the anti tangle brush.”

“Narwal Freo Z Ultra is the best robot mop but an ok vacuum. It does not have an internal water tank so this means it’ll have to frequently go back to the station to rewet its mops. This shouldn’t be a problem if your house isn’t very big. If it is, consider the other two models with an internal water tank. I’ve also heard mixed reviews about NarWal’s customer service. As for the app, I’m not so sure but I think it’s on par with the other brands (please correct me if I’m wrong). As the robot’s home is behind furniture, I’d recommend a model that has a self cleaning base station. Narwal doesn’t have this but I believe the next two models do. Dreame’s L/X40 has similar computer vision smarts and can extend and swing its extended mop under areas like the fridge where stains tend to accumulate with better vacuuming performance than the Freo Z. There’s currently no other model in the international market that can do this (NarWal’s 001 Max is still only available in mainland China). I’ve heard mixed reactions when it comes to its international customer service. The app is feature rich but means the UI will be more complicated. The QRevo Curv/Edge can also be considered but won’t have as amazing computer vision smarts as the previous two models. However, I heard the app has the best UI and that customer service can be mixed.”
