“Width. 27"w is tight, but only SQ and Frigidaire seem to make anything under that. The reason is, my Maytag dryer is 29" wide, I didn't realize that was oversize until I got it home. I do like it, so plan on keeping it until it has issues. I can squeeze in another 27 incher if I have to.”

“Yes, many newer sets will be available, but for my money, none of the newer washers and driers would be as desirable. The peace of mind I would feel knowing that I owned something that was designed to last and to be easy to repair would be completely worth it. “Well, those old timers worked forever. Back in the day, my mom's Maytag did laundry for seven people for 14 years and never failed. But remember nowadays one service call can really get you. And can you get parts? My 11 year-old whirlpool microwave broke down and I could not get parts for it, just saying. I could barely see it, but I believe the washer only has cold rinse? That surprises me, perhaps they're not as old as I think not sure that I like that you should be able to take the model number and find out when it was made.”

“2 sets of Maytag washers/dryers at 2 different places. All 7-8 years old now, and no problems with any of them, aside for a minor rattle in the dryer when new, which was quickly serviced. I agree that the filter access isn’t great, as the other commenter mentioned. How often you need to access that? It depends. Odd things sometimes end up in there. With both sets of washers, we’ve had to access that filter one time on one machine. Your results may vary. I wouldn’t overthink it too much. I’m pleased with them, and would purchase again.”

“We have the slightly older version of these that we inherited when we bought a townhouse. They're going on 10 years now without an issue. I left behind LGs at the old house and these do just as good of a job to be fair and the controls are a lot more sensibly laid out. Make sure to leave the washer cracked to dry out after it's used and run a cleaning cycle a few times a year. I didn't think I would be a fan of these because I've had a couple of Maytag top loaders that I absolutely hated because they shredded clothes. But this set is great. Of course, I'm just a sample size of one so I don't know what the overall reputation is.”

“Please do not get a top load. All these new ones no matter the price don’t clean as well as your grandmas old Maytag. Front loaders are scientifically proven to clean better, be more gentle, and more efficient. I highly recommend Electrolux. My wave touch model I bought in 2013 lasted over 10 years of HEAVY use before the bearings started to go bad. I could have fixed it and kept going but didn’t want to do the work at the time. Leave the door and detergent tray open, run a self clean cycle once in a while, occasionally wipe out the seal and you will not have any issues with mold or bad odors. Also the reliability I’m seeing on top loaders these days as horrible!”

“We have the Maytag pair from the mid 1990’s -dryer is a Neptune model. Both machines are flawless after 25 + years (I replaced the band around the dryer drum about a year ago, used a screwdriver and cost $14. That was it though. Never a service call or any issue. Don’t understand how the reputation can have fallen so much but I have read that they have outsourced production of the dryers to L.G. since Whirlpool bought the brand. We bought Maytag because of the reputation (the lonely and bored repairman) and have been Very satisfied. It is rather odd watching much newer models with their fancy digital controls get put out for garbage on the sidewalk after only a few years of use.”

“So, while I have this model it is really too early for an full review. I am aware that Maytag has experienced a drop in quality and customer support when Whirlpool bought them, but I still consider them the flagship of Whirlpool, so that's something. Of the current models that are still running (my house and family's, all entry level, similar to this), oldest is 2008, then 2012, then this model and equivalent gas dryer. Only one I've had to service in all this time is the 2008 dryer, thermal fuse went out because my mother was not keeping an eye on the lint exhaust. Otherwise it is still running. Never had an issue with the washer. 2012 series (did not have the impeller on the washer, not a fan of that design but no issues washing) never had a problem and they are going strong 12 years later. Just bought the 2023 series, took a whole 30 seconds to figure out the cycles and how to start. Yes, seems like they are saving money on the thickness of metal on the door, yes I miss the really old models that had less options and much simpler controls, good luck finding that anywhere. No issues cleaning, no issues running, I take a massive grain of salt with any online reviews, people here seem to have their favorites and favorites to trash. Whatever motivation, I'm not buying it. For reference my original units when I bought this house were 1980's models, they made it to 2012 and were still working when I replaced them. The 2012 models still work, gave them to a family member. Previous house had 1970's versions, I never replaced those. All Maytags, my fridges are all Maytags, one is 14 years old with no issues, the other is 31 years old and finally starting to show its age (to be fair, that one was pre-whirlpool). So, while I have this model it is really too early for an accurate non-ancedontal review, but my track history with post 2006 (when Whirlpool bought Maytag) has been pretty good. Oh, I like how they are relatively easy to fix myself and parts are easy and cheap to get, also applies to GE, Whirlpool, name brand appliances. Cannot say that about your high end appliances or the TV's turned into appliances.”

“Yes, in my opinion, 2 decade old Maytag Dependables are the sort of machine in the category of Speed Queen. Hopefully they can keep repairing those for many years to come. I think some machines are far more repairable than others. Instead of being able to replace a wire harness or an electrical board, one has to replace an entire module or sealed kit. Then that module is sold for several hundred dollars, so that with the cost of labor, one can easily spend $400-600 on the repair. The thing about a Speed Queen, and many older machines, is that if a $10 part fails, you can replace the $10 part.”

“My parents have Maytag Dependable’s going on 20 years. They are dreading the day they need to be replaced because the door to the basement is extremely small. The reason they ended up with the dependable’s is because they could be taken apart and reassembled. I suppose any machine can technically be taken apart and put back together but it seems like that could be done with speed queen? They aren’t in the market yet, but it would be google to know.”

“I just sold my LG front loaders with a house and miss them. They spent 5 years in a salon washing towels and five at home. Perfect operation. Only issue was that the front panel text is a little hard to read. No biggie. I sold appliances back when I got these. LG was the only manufacturer vinyl dipping their boards back then to ensure isolation from moisture. Might explain the reliability. No odor ever. No mildew. Like I said, zero problems. If you want a fast cycle, it's available. Otherwise embrace the slow gentle cycles that are far better for your clothes and clean extraordinarily well with cold. I always use the extra rinse too as detergent residue gives me dermatitis. I have some Maytag front loaders now that are five years old and to be fair they've been wonderful, except for the gasket mildew issue. Gotta wipe them after each load and the problem is eliminated. I did the control panel layout slot more on the Maytag but the LG was a better design overall.”

“Does Speed Queen have a troll farm just for this thread? Had to hunt them down to see if anyone sells them and I find the lowest cost coming in at $1400 each, vs about $600 each for other brands. That's with a top load washer, not a fan of front load. For reference I just replaced a 30 year old Whirlpool set with a Maytag entry level (4.5cu ft washer and matching gas dryer). Got a Maytag set for my Mom 11 years ago which is working fine and my brother has a 15 year old set, although for that one I had to replace the dryer fuse last year, it was a major deal, $14 for a set of six, so now I'm ready for any of the others to act up. Youtube has a decent video of what to check when it acts up. I didn't bother to check the fuse first so I replaced the igniter, temp sensor and gas coil, $40 kit, so that's all brand new and I have the old ones as spares if another acts up. And for reference, Whirlpool and Maytag are the same company so parts are interchangeable and easily available on Amazon. You'd be surprised how easy it is to fix name branded appliances, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers. Fridges are hit or miss, and since not poisoning the family is kinda a priority I eventually just replace those. I did reseal a broken freon line and recharged my beer fridge, just to see if I could.”

Samsung is probably the worse, made in China, really flimsy construction to keep shipping down parts are hard to get, and expensive when you can find them. Asian brands (and GE is now one of them, part of Haier) have really poor parts availability, they're motto is to "replace" rather than fix.”

“Honestly I’d skip Samsung for washers/dryers. Lots of tech but way too many reliability complaints and expensive repairs. GE is a bit better but Speed Queen is pretty much the gold standard for reliability and longevity (they’re built like tanks and last 15+ years). Downside is they’re more expensive and don’t have all the fancy features but you rarely hear about major breakdowns. If that’s out of budget, Whirlpool and Maytag are also solid choices. Easier to get parts and service, and they generally hold up well for 8-10 years if you stick to their basic models. Front loaders usually clean better and are gentler on clothes, but good top loaders like GE or Whirlpool are still a safe bet. This list has some decent options from other brands as well.”

“Look at the Maytag 586. It's about as close as you're going to get to an old-school washer today without paying Speed Queen money. And it has a full 5-year parts and labor warranty The GE 485 It's a good option too if you want to be around the $600 mark. Dual action, 4.5 cubic foot drum, selectable water level Don't put much thought into the dryer they have a pretty basic job and that is to tumble clothes and blow hot air. Any Whirlpool family dryer that has the lint trap on top is where where I highly recommend going. Whirlpool has made that design for over 50 years, it's changed very little in that time. It's dependable reliable and easy to work on if needed.”

Against my better judgement I let their delivery drivers hook it up for the extra fee. They didn’t hook them up securely and flooded my basement in the process. Red flag #1. Two weeks ago, the lid lock broke and are still waiting for a part from the service company. Red Flag #2. My wife’s been going to the laundromat ever since. “On my Maytag dryer, I add to replace the heating element. Something that I changed in the past on other units: remove 4 screws at the back, get access to the heating element, install new part, done in 20 minutes. But on my Maytag, there's no access panel at the back. We had to remove the top, open the front, etc. The unit was basically all disassembled. Definitely not for the DIY! I search on YouTube and many modern units are still built with the typical rear access panel, but not this one. Similarly, I have a clogged water inlet screen on the Maytag washing machine. On some other brands (like LG), you simply remove the dirty plastic screen and install a new one (a 5$ part and a 5 minutes job). On my Maytag, nope. You need to open the whole unit and replace the entire water inlet valve, which is a much bigger job.”

I bought a set of Maytag washer and dryers in 2016 and had constant control board failures costing $250 each time. Replaced the washer after the third failure in 3 years. “This is a year after you posted but… I am replacing a dead 5 year old Maytag with a speed queen. It’s smaller but built better. As for cost… think of it this way. I bought a $1200 Maytag (CAD). 5 years later it’s dead. Something stuck between the drum and tub… or something with the transmission. I can’t even get it repaired because they use dissimilar metals to join the trans and drum spline. So it’s basically brand new and unrepairable. Parts warranty also doesn’t cover the trans which is what breaks. New trans is $575 bucks plus $150 install fee. So fixing the Maytag now has cost me more than the price of the speed queen. I wish I spent the money up front and not had to deal with installing a brand new machine after 5 years. Fuck Maytag. Fuck companies making throw away appliances to save money. Buy it once. “There was a previous model to this one that had a sturdier lid and worked amazing!! Customers of mine loved it! Then we get this model. Sucks donkey pickle. Fill options get overridden by auto sense technology. Why bother offering medium fill and deep fill if the machine is just going to override your selection? Dumb motherboards. Dumb techs. Take a dang good product, feel like something needs to be upgraded and innovative, and ruin the good name. For those who like to sit around for an hour while the clothes wash, keep a few of these models around. Otherwise, bring back a couple old-school machines for those of us who are intelligent enough to figure out how to select out own water levels, water temperature, and cycle. We don't need 7 cycle choices. We don't need weight sensing. As a salesperson, I find it sad that I have to tell people the Whirlpool family is just as unreliable and crappy as Samsung. (Oh, don't get me started about Samsung!!!!!) See those GE washers in the next lane? Get one of those. Avoid anything that says HE. GE is going to have loud machines. Not going to lie. But you can get machines without so much electronics. Maytag was amazing before Whirlpool took over. Actually, everything was good until Whirlpool and LG started buying out the names. You don't know who makes what anymore. I wish I didn't have to sell anything in the Whirlpool family, but that's what my employer carries and that's what I have to do to make sales. “Be careful. The way their warranty works is designed to make it more expensive to fix your washer than to buy a new one. I just found out today how screwed I am. Mine just died after less than 4 years of use. The main board failed. A new mainboard plus a service appointment is literally more than the washer cost new. And coincidentally, the warranty only covers the drive motor and the wash basket. It is a trash warranty. Here is the board I need, so you can see I'm not kidding about the price: https://www.maytagreplacementparts.com/PartDetail/Control-Board/W11419171/4960982 This is apparently one of the most common failures. “DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! I'm less then impressed with this washer. I purchased this in February 2024 and it's already broken. We had a tech come out and replaced a broken lock, faulty pump and bad motherboard after 2 service calls. I called customer service (more than an hour with this call) they transferred me to 4 different customer service reps then stated that they had trouble locating the motherboard and NEEDED 10 BUSINESS DAYS to locate the motherboard and even then they dont know if they will locate the motherboard or be able to give my money back. I have kids and can't be taking them to the laundry mat to wash all my clothes. All I can say is if you really want to waste your money on a poorly designed washer, please Buy a whirlpool, kenmore or maytag.”

Kenmore will probably be similar to the Frigidaire or LG, depending on what model you get. For front loaders specifically, I've heard good things about Electrolux. Everyone here always says to get Speed Queen, and yes, they are built well, but they are priced above what a lot of people are willing/able to pay. Ones to stay away from are Samsung, GE, and Whirlpool built brands including Maytag, Amana, Roper (those being exceptionally cheap and nasty).”

“I clean homes and wash my clients’ laundry for a living. Been at it for about 15 years now. LG’s have always impressed me the most for their cleaning performance. I also have clients with LG washers that are approaching 20 years old without any problems. I have seen one LG that bit the bullet at 11 years because the control panel gave up. A Speed Queen does an OK job, but I have not understood what all the fuss is about - and Consumer Reports supports that as well. GE washes fine. Maytags and Whirlpools do a fair cleaning, but I’ve seen plenty of them die by around 10 years. The only machines I would strongly discourage are Samsung. I have seen so many of my clients’ Samsung washers and dryers break, the washers also are bad at time management (keep taking far more time than initially shown on the screen), the dryers take forever, and the cleaning isn’t all that great.”

“This is only one subset of data, but worth looking at the Yale Appliance Repair Stats for front loaders. For them at least, they sell significantly more LG appliances than other brands (62% of their total sales, almost 3.5x as many as Maytag, the next leading brand). Higher number sold will lead to more negative reviews just by the nature that people that have issues are more likely to write about them than a person who has none, despite the fact that their company is repairing LG appliances at a lower rate than most other brands. Granted, this data could be way better (ie, are they talking about repairing only the current year machines, or are they only repairing 10 year old units?), but it does back up the Consumer Reports ratings.”

“Fair enough. However, LG makes very reliable washers and dryers. Besides, fixing a washing machine on your own is not only super simple, but cheap too. Washing machines are not very complex. There are not many components and they are easy to access for replacement. I know those old Maytags are built to last, but that thing HAS lasted. It is a matter of time before something breaks. From my experience with my 80’s set, the arms that held the drum (front loader) eventually cracked, and was not worth the time nor the money to repair since it is one big assembly. Structural repairs are a no go. Replacing a pump, valve or board… super easy.”

“Yeah yeah yeah. Durable & reliable. But call technicians in your area and make sure someone will work on something from the 80s. And you can get parts for them? Not the timers. You can only get the timers used on ebay. 40 year old parts on 40 year old units. Its fun to be nostalgic but these are going to be real inconvenient when they break. Any good repair company isn't going to work on anything older than 25 years for liability reasons. They strip a screw out on accident, now they cant get a part becomes a headache for them.”

“If you are buying new, go with Speed Queen's TC5 for the washer and the DC5 for the dryer. Speed Queen has been owned by Alliance Laundry Systems since 1998, sells their washers and dryers to independent appliance retailers, and best of all, makes ONLY washers and dryers. Speed Queen washers and dryers are designed to last 25 YEARS if used 8 hours every day. All other modern washers and dryers are designed to last only 3 to 6 years. If you can't afford that, then go with an older Whirlpool direct drive (made from the 1980s until 2010-11). Any Maytag made after 2006 is not really a Maytag, but a higher end Whirlpool. Older Non-HE Maytag washers and dryers made in Newton Iowa are a good vintage alternative to all other modern washers and dryers. DO NOT buy any household appliances made by Samsung. From 2010 to 2017, my parents bought a Samsung front load washer and matching dryer, which quit working in June of 2017. The washer was already on its last legs by then. I told my parents to buy Speed Queen and that is what they have. The dryer had some overheating problems, but the washer has worked flawlessly since they got it. Whatever you get, be sure to leave the washer open when not in use so bacteria doesn't grow inside, which lead to a bad odor. Replace the inlet hoses every 5 years especially if they're made of rubber”

“The Whirlpool Corporation used to be a great appliance company. They sold more washers and driers than any other American company, mostly due to sales of the Sears Kenmore brand. For decades and decades, As far as washing machines go, the Whirlpool and Kenmore brand were number 2, behind number 1, which was Maytag. This was based upon surveys of people being asked, what type of washer do you wish you owned along with customer satisfaction of the brand they did own. Then Maytag, after a ton of bad press and class action law suits over a front load washer they released without proper field testing, a CEO that prioritized buying up other appliance companies while not paying attention to the debt load the company was carrying on the books….filed for Bankruptcy. After much ado, the Whirlpool Corporation bought out the rights to the Maytag name and other companies that has been previously acquired by Maytag. Today, the Maytag name still sells appliances because of the prestige that company once carried. Under the skirt, behind the paint, when you buy a Maytag product, you are buying a Whirlpool engineered and designed product. The problem is that for the past several (7-10 ) years, the reliability of Whirlpool products as a whole, including the brand names that fall under its corporate umbrella, have been spiraling downward. It can be said truthfully, that almost no appliance company is turning out goods that were as reliable as they were decade ago…….Whirlpool has taken the largest leap, from a company that was literally on top. If you want to buy a front load washer, in the United States, that is consistently rated as #1 in performance and reliability…..get an LG. At relatively the same price point as the Maytag, a comparable LG will have a larger capacity and more useful options. A much better tried and true recirculation system. Rinsing performance that exceeds WP/Maytag. The choices of up to 2-3 extra rinse cycles, versus 1. It’s just simply a better washer and super easy to work on, if something does go wrong. All LG’s have an easy to access drain pump filter. There are people responding to this message talking about Speed Queen. Most are referring to their top loader. A very pricy machine, with an enviable reliability record. It’s an average to good washer as far as performance goes. The Maytag front loader you just bought will perform better than the SQ top loader. Besides that, you are shopping for a front loader. SQ does make a ridiculously expensive front loader. Again, very robust, very reliable. However, for what you pay, you get an average performing wash machine, small capacity and the machine doesn’t even have an onboard heater available. The time for a few minutes of buyers remorse, is now…..before they are delivered. I’ve had so many bad experiences with both Maytag and Whirlpool in the last several years…..mostly because everyone calls me to diagnose their laundry machinery problems. …..buyer beware. If for some reason you don’t want or like something about the models LG offers……I’d go for an Electrolux over the Maytag. I have owned multiple LG front loaders over the past 22 years. I move around a lot and have sold the previous washers with the homes I’ve sold. I keep going back because they are excellent. My current machine is 5 years old. I would say choose ELUX over Maytag because I pay attention to these posts. You rarely hear a peep out of ELUX owners. If you have any questions…..ask me, here or through DM’s.”
