“Maybe I’ll get some hate for this, but I have a no frills Amana washer and dryer and those things have been great. Love how they’re not connected to the internet and they’re built well.”

“My incredibly basic Whirlpool washer and Amana dryer are absolutely awesome. They’re basically the cheapest ones you can buy but they cost nothing to fix when things go wrong. I probably have like $25 into parts the couple times they’ve broken over the last decade. Mostly fuses and safety switches worn out.”

“Either spring for a Speed Queen or get a No frills Hotpoint or Amana. They're the same internally as a Whirlpool/Maytag or GE”

“Same. Cheap no frills Amana for 10 years, zero issues. Simple white. Don't need 20 cycles and 20 buttons.”

“I have a GE that is complete garbage that came with the house I bought. My fiance had the exact same one in her old apartment and it was also bad. I had great luck with a cheap Amana set that I had. It similarly had no screens and a simple setup. I bought a house that had to have a stack and sold my amanas. I wish I could have them back.”

“Same company. I would say even the Amana is a good choice because you are likely not going to get any more years out of the more expensive Maytag. They just aren’t made to last like the older ones. So pay for the features you want and if you get 4-5years without problems you are winning. I like the whirlpool stuff don’t get me wrong.”

“Having a removable agitator will be extremely helpful in time. I’d definitely go with that. Or get Amana with an extended warranty. Try to get an extended on whichever you purchase. The question is: is it a waste of money since the appliance may not last longer than 5 years anyway? Nah. If it breaks down in year 3 and you get another 5 years out of it, you’ll be good. Every dryer I’ve had lasts forever. No extended required. The trick is not to let the dryer do 2-3 loads in a row. It’ll melt parts inside and then they break.”

“I second this. I bought a slightly used second hand amana set for $500 a month ago and it has been a great purchase. It's very simple, it doesn't have new fancy features but I didn't need or want any of that. If you want something that will do what you need it to do and be expensive this is the set I would go with.”

“We just bought the electrolux stacking machines, and so far, like them, I have a couple of rentals, and one has an Amana set and they are great and not new at all, no complaints. The guy that does all our repair type work on the rentals when I asked him what not to buy, he said he would never buy an LG appliance or a Samsung. He said he gets calls to repair them too often”

“I really wanted Speed Queen but the price was just more than I could afford at the time so I got a basic Amana top load agitator washer that seemed to be of old school design, no fancy features, and it works great, no issues so far in 6 years. I also recommend adding a little borax to the wash basin, it really helps.”

“When we bought ours the sales guy suggested getting the SQ washer and then the most basic dryer in the store. It's a small shop and he also does some of the repairing if his tech is out. He wasn't impressed enough with the SQ dryers to recommend them at price premium they charge over a very basic Amana or GE. His honesty has kept us coming back for all our appliance purchases”

“I think speed quem may be over hyped. I think a good, no frills no digital readout set will suit most people. I have a shitty Amana set that has been around like 15 years and all I've replaced was the dryer time once and diagnosed and replaced it myself for $80 after watching a 10 minute YouTube video.”

“If you're on a budget, I love my Amana HE washer (Model: NTW4516FW). It's simple but works great. It has an old school agitator and a deep wash option, made by Whirlpool in the USA, parts are cheap (I've never had to work on it in the last 5 years of hard use), and it has simple controls. It's called the Poor Mans Speed Queen. If you're not on a tight budget; you can't beat Speed Queen. Run, don't walk when you see Samsung or LG.”

“Depending on your budget, the most reliable top load agitator machines are Amana, LG and Speed Queen. But keep in mind that a Speed Queen is three times the price of a basic Amana. If you don’t care about matching, check a used dealer for a dryer built before 2010 that has mechanical knobs.”

“High capacity is misleading. While the drum may be 5 cu/f, the actual usable capacity is only 66-70% of that number. See this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrpbbYwwUY4&t=1s The only top load to get is the Speed Queen TC5. As for dryer, you can just get the cheapest Amana dryer you can find with a long lint filter on the top.”

“I just recently replaced a Maytag washer and a whirlpool dryer that were about 10 years old and finally given up… Shopping at my local big box home store I didn’t get much help with which washers and dryers are best as most of the sales people said “they don’t make them like they used to“ no matter what brand…They don’t carry speed queen and those are out of my price range as I’m a single person and don’t need a heavy duty expensive washer and dryer set… I ended up going with a basic LG set of top load washer (with agitator) and matching dryer… they were the only ones that had any hint of quality feel to them as far as the door/lid closing and general construction of the machine… The whirlpools I saw felt terribly cheap and flimsy, as well as the Amana and the GE models I looked at… I’ve had these about six months and they’ve been flawless so far and work very well so hopefully I can get a good few years… I’m not expecting them to last 20 years as I don’t think any of them do anymore… with energy star tax savings locally I spent just shy of $1000 for the set…”

“Don’t get Amana. The drain pump sensor stopped working causing it to continuously drain even when the washer is bone dry. Completely fried. The only way to fix it is getting a new washer. I’ve only had it a year.”

“Personally after using my first GE washing machine and after owning nothing but whirlpool before, I can say I’d take a hotpoint over an Amana any day. Larger drum, you can truly pick your own water level, on any cycle. And it will fill and run with the lid unlocked, only locking for the spin cycle.”

“I really like the Frigidaire top load washer (haven't tried the dryer, although they are all pretty much the same), and I've heard LG makes pretty good laundry machines too. Kenmore will probably be similar to the Frigidaire or LG, depending on what model you get. For front loaders specifically, I've heard good things about Electrolux. Everyone here always says to get Speed Queen, and yes, they are built well, but they are priced above what a lot of people are willing/able to pay. Ones to stay away from are Samsung, GE, and Whirlpool built brands including Maytag, Amana, Roper (those being exceptionally cheap and nasty).”

“For those curious, Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana are all Whirlpool brands. Maytag and Whirlpool units are even made on the same production line so they are pretty much identical aside from the branding assuming you are comparing units of equivalent cost. If anyone is looking to buy a Whirlpool unit I can send Inside Pass discount codes. Just DM or chat me the email address you want the pass sent to. Also let me know if you want a Canadia pass or American pass.”

“Stay away from Samsung front loads...high fail rate!!! I would look at top load to.. without agitator is not gonna wash as well. If you can find anything like from a second hand place that doesn't have the "smart fill" that is energy star certified.. like anything in the last 10 years...they're better. I have a Amana set from 2013 that I fix when I have a problem...which has been 3 repairs in last 5 years... also I fix appliances and electronics for a living 😖”
